Within the scope of a few chapters we have set forth for us in a very condensed form how we ought to live as Jesus' people, as disciples of the King. But note that the Sermon on the Mount comes to us in a setting of grace. Just as God redeemed Israel from Egypt first and then instructed them how to live as his saved people, so, too, does Christ instruct us how we ought to live as people upon whom the light of God's mercy for sinners has shined. The Sermon on the Mount is not about getting into the kingdom of heaven, but about living as citizens in the kingdom.
