When You Fast

Preacher:
Passage: Matthew 6:16-18

Because we're sinners, we can misuse God's good gift of food, sometimes even making it a priority over our fellowship with God. (When was the last time you missed a meal because you were seeking the Lord in prayer and his Word?) Fasting reminds us that there is a hunger more necessary to satisfy than our hunger for food, and that is a hunger for God in Christ. Fasting is a spiritual act of devotion, an act of piety that goes hand-in-hand with praying and humbling ourselves before the Almighty. It says, "I don't want to live by my own desires. Rather, I will discipline my body and keep it under control, that I might draw closer to the Lord."
