Sanctity and Suffering

Preacher:
Passage: Matthew 5:10-12

Like soup and sandwich, sanctity and suffering go together. The world, lost in darkness and sin, hates the Light of Christ. Disciples cannot expect to be treated differently, and thus the followers of Christ often suffer persecution. This isn't suffering because you're rude or a criminal. Rather, it's because you live like Christ. This is the suffering that our Savior says is blessed. But we can "rejoice and be glad" when we suffer for righteousness' sake, because it's evidence of the reality of authentic faith. We should not be surprised, but ought to prepare ourselves for when Christ calls us to suffer as he did.
