Christ descended first, to ascend as the Victor over sin and death. And he has shared the benefits of his victory with his people. Christ's ascension confirms and secures his coming again. This has been God's purpose in the salvation of men from the beginning, his plan to bring glory to himself:  the saving of rebels, indeed, of a rebellious world, that he might dwell in the midst of his people forever and ever.
